Oxolinic ointment for SARS and viral infections of the skin in pregnant women

Acute respiratory infections, including influenza, account for about 90% of all reported infectious diseases. In Russia, these diseases are diagnosed annually in 30-40 million people. In the epidemic season, the question of prevention is acute. This is especially true for expectant mothers, as the infection can affect the normal course of pregnancy. One of the popular prophylactic agents of local action for more than forty years is Oxolinic Ointment.

Oxolinic ointment - prophylactic and therapeutic agent during pregnancy

Acute respiratory infections are caused by viruses. Viruses are one of the oldest and most widespread forms of life on earth. The problem of developing a therapeutic drug is complicated by the fact that these infectious agents are represented by thousands of species that constantly mutate and adapt to the action of drugs. The danger of influenza and SARS for a pregnant woman is mainly high fever, which increases the risk of fetal defects, and the following complications:

  • pneumonia;
  • bronchitis;
  • sinusitis;
  • dysfunction of the heart.

The World Health Organization notes only two antiviral drugs with proven efficacy and safety: Oseltamivir and Zanamivir. But the same organization notes the importance of preventive measures to prevent infection during epidemics. For these purposes, mass vaccination is recommended. But scientists are constantly looking for and developing other methods of preventing ARVI. Achievements of domestic virology over the past decades have allowed to introduce into medical practice a number of systemic antiviral drugs: Arbidol, Kagocel, Viferon. However, does not lose the relevance of such a drug for topical use, as Oxolinic ointment (Oxolin).

Most viruses enter the body through the nasal cavity through airborne droplets.

What is a drug, how does it work

Oxolin is classified by Russian doctors as an antiviral drug for outdoor use. The active component of the drug is a chemical compound with a complex name - naphthalene-1,2,3,4-tetron.

The medicine was registered in 1970. This was preceded by serious tests to study the effect of Oxolin on various groups of viruses and to evaluate its safety. According to modern instructions, the drug inhibits the activity of the following types of viruses in direct contact with them:

  • influenza virus strains;
  • herpes simplex virus;
  • adenoviruses.

The drug is a protective barrier against viruses and thus increases the local immunity of the nasal mucosa. There is also evidence that the drug reduces the ability of a virus that has already entered the cell to multiply. Therefore, Oxolin is prescribed not only for prevention, but also in the complex treatment of infection.

Forms of release

The ointment is available in two versions: 0.25 and 3%. And the first option is intended for application to the mucous membranes, and the second - directly on the skin. The ointment is packaged in an aluminum tube weighing 10 g. About one-fifth of the drug is absorbed through the mucous membranes, and the twentieth is absorbed through the skin. Oxolin is excreted from the body during the day by the kidneys.

Oxolinic ointment is used for the prevention and treatment of SARS

In recent years, this antiviral drug has been subjected to severe criticism. The main argument of this approach is that it did not pass randomized studies on the standards of foreign medicine and is not used anywhere except in the CIS countries. Because of this, Oxolinic Ointment even fell into the category of medical drugs with unproven efficacy. This opinion is supported by a number of well-known doctors, including E. O. Komarovsky.

But as noted above, if you carefully study the history of the medicine, you can find information about large studies conducted in the USSR. The study of oxolinic ointment was conducted to the fullest extent of the regulations that existed at that time. At first, scientists observed the effect of the drug on animals. Then clinical studies were conducted on humans, including children. In total, scientists from five medical institutions and 13 thousand people took part in the study of Oxolin over a decade. As a result, it was proved that the use of the drug as a prophylactic during periods of epidemics of influenza and ARVI reduces the incidence rate by about 50%. The use of drugs in the case of an acute course of the disease reduces inflammation of the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract and prevents complications. Therefore, doctors continue to recommend using Oxolinic Ointment in many recommendations for the prevention of seasonal infectious diseases.

Safety during pregnancy, effects on the fetus

In the official instructions in the list of contraindications during pregnancy is missing. But manufacturers recommend to treat future mothers with Oxolinic ointment only on prescription of a doctor who will take into account the ratio of the possible benefits and potential risks. The fact is that the safety of the drug for pregnant women has not been studied. Animal studies conducted in the Soviet Union have shown that the drug does not affect the growth and development of the fetus, does not inhibit the immune system, and is not toxic. Most doctors safely prescribe oxolin ointment to pregnant women during periods of dangerous flu epidemics.

Indications for appointment to expectant mothers

Basically, Oxolin is prescribed to pregnant women as a prophylactic in case of influenza epidemics. But it can also be used in the following cases:

  • rhinitis;
  • viral lesions of the skin;
  • herpes;
  • shingles and scaly;
  • stomatitis;
  • gingivitis;
  • adenoviral conjunctivitis.

Also, the drug is used for wart removal. The use of this ointment in the treatment of skin diseases is considered by modern medicine to be a somewhat outdated method, since there are more effective methods and progressive medications.

Oxolinic ointment is effective and safe in treating herpes in pregnant women.

Restrictions on use and side effects

The only limitation in using Oxolinic ointment is individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, which is expressed in allergic reactions: itching, burning, redness at the site of application, tearing. Moreover, it should be noted that doctors consider a normal first reaction in the form of a light tingling in the nose and the discharge of a small amount of mucus from it, if these symptoms disappear within one or two minutes. In case of occurrence and preservation of undesirable effects for a longer time, you should seek help from a doctor.

Interaction with other drugs

The instructions for the drug indicates that its use in conjunction with adrenomimetics can lead to dry nasal mucosa. No other interactions are reported.

At the same time 0.25% oxolinic ointment is well tolerated by adults and children, does not cause side effects, which is its advantage over the drugs for systemic use.

Application features

Even before using such a time-tested drug during pregnancy, it is better to consult a doctor. He will assess the degree of need for medication and select a treatment regimen. The standard therapeutic regimen depends on the type and stage of the disease.

For the prevention of influenza and ARVI, 0.25% ointment should be used. It is applied with a thin layer to the mucous membrane of both nasal passages twice a day. It is usually recommended to use a prophylactic agent for a month. With rhinitis, the duration of therapy ranges from three to four days. Before each treatment of the nose it is necessary to thoroughly clean the nasal passages with warm water. In the case of stomatitis, 0.25% oxolinic ointment is also used, with which the entire oral cavity should be lubricated, but especially the areas with ulcers. This procedure is recommended to perform several times a day until the complete disappearance of mucosal lesions. Before use, you need to remove residues using moistened cotton wool and treat the surface with any antiseptic solutions.

It can take up to three months to treat herpes and warts. In these diseases, smear 0.3% with ointment on the damaged skin and cover this area with a gauze bandage. The procedure is repeated two to three times a day. Each time, you should first wash the skin from the remnants of medication.

Ointment can safely be used during work that requires increased attention, including when driving vehicles, since Oxolin does not affect the speed of nervous processes.

Prevention of influenza and ARVI

Oxolinic ointment is included in the list of main measures for the prevention of influenza

In our family, Oxolinic Ointment is successfully used in the epidemic season. Most often, it is used to prevent acute respiratory viral diseases in children. One of the children goes to school and the other goes to kindergarten. In the cold season at the peak of the incidence of about half of the children in preschool are with signs of a cold. The probability of staying healthy in this situation tends to zero. Educators, of course, are trying to massively comply with such popular preventive measures as wearing capsules with garlic on the chest. As a result, the whole group is filled with a characteristic garlic smell, but the children continue to get sick. At home we carry out our prophylaxis, which includes a whole range of measures, including Oxolinic Ointment. In the morning before leaving the house, we lubricate the nasal passages of this elder and youngest son with this agent. The duration of use depends on the overall incidence in school and kindergarten. Last winter, not one of our children missed a single lesson because of ARVI and the flu. The wife also periodically uses this prophylactic. She used it in time of pregnancy. No adverse reactions were observed.

Analogs allowed for pregnant women

Complete analogues in composition, functionality and method of application of Oxolinic ointment are: Oxonaftylin, Tetraxolin, Oxolin-Darnitsa. They are different trademarks of the same drug.

According to the purpose, the form of release and method of application can be distinguished the following popular drugs:

  • Viferon;
  • Pinosol;
  • Evamenol;
  • Golden Star.

Among them, Viferon refers to interferon. The rest of the preparations contain extracts of medicinal plants.

Viferon for external use is available as an ointment and gel. The active component of the tool is interferon alpha-2b. In a healthy organism, in response to the action of viruses, its own interferon is released, which inhibits their activity. With a weakened immunity, it is not produced quickly enough and in small quantities. Therefore, the use of Viferon in the form of ointment and gel increases the protective properties of the body. This medicine, as well as Oxolinic ointment, is intended for use in the complex treatment of SARS, herpes and flu prevention. Only the mechanism of action differs. Oksolin directly suppresses viruses, and Viferon allows you to quickly improve immunity to combat these infectious agents.

Pinosol and Evamenol in the form of a nasal ointment can be given to pregnant women for any period of time with acute and chronic rhinitis, since they are antiseptics and have anti-inflammatory and anti-edema effects. These medicines can also be used as a prophylactic agent. But if a pregnant woman has a predisposition to allergies to components of plants, then taking Pinosol and Evamenol will be contraindicated.

Balsam Golden Star has been used for cold symptoms in the CIS countries for more than forty years. It is produced on the basis of camphor and plant oils, has an antiseptic and irritating nerve receptors effect. Gold star is used for acute respiratory viral infections, runny nose, headaches, insect bites. Unlike the above medications, balsam cannot be applied to mucous membranes, they are lubricated only with external areas of the body. For example, when rhinitis drug rubbed into the skin of the wings of the nose and temporal region.

Video: Dr. Sergey Agapkin on Oxolinic Ointment

And oxolinic ointment helps me a lot, in 2-3 days everything passes. And then the second time during pregnancy jumps out. In general, he has periodically (once or twice a year) from my childhood. Somewhere a year before the pregnancy, I took a course of acyclovir, and there was nothing for a whole year. And during pregnancy I got out again (apparently, my immunity is weak).

Girls, and I did not go okolinka. I start to sneeze from it constantly. Many people say that it helps, but I don’t have time to help me — everything flies out with a sneeze.

I do not know, I now regularly use okolinka - the season of the flu and colds, but I can not hurt. I ride in the bus, where every second coughs and sneezes and until (pah-pah) is infected, although the immunity is reduced. And why smear my mouth (as Soroka said), it is not clear to me, because the effect is only when you breathe your nose! And if you breathe through your mouth, even oxolin will not help. In general, it is harmless - it is possible for her and pregnant, it is written everywhere. And the saline solution is just for washing the nose, as protection it will not help, the more I read the doctor's opinion: when you rinse your nose with saline, for example, Aquamaris, in fact, you swallow it, right? So, if a virus creeps into your nose, you are pushing it into your body.

The entire first trimester smeared my nose when visiting public places and at work. I think that only thanks to the ointment did not get sick in the spring, because almost everyone was sick at work.

In order not to fall ill with respiratory diseases during the gestational period, it is enough to observe preventive measures. What kind of medication with this use, it is best to tell the doctor. He has complete information on the epidemiological situation in the region and on the types of viruses spreading. In most cases, the use of oxolinic ointment will benefit both pregnant and all other family members.
